Sorry it’s been so long since my last post! Hubby and I have been so busy with house renovations that it’s been hard to find a minute of down time. Right now we’re working on my walk-in closet.
(Still a work in progress!)
I just finished an amazing book by Dr. Amy Myers called The Autoimmune Solution. I first heard of Dr. Amy Myers at the autoimmune summit. She kept referring to her new book and I made a mental note that I should get it. When my new primary care doctor (who is a functional medicine doctor) referenced the book I knew I really needed to get my hands on it.
The book walks you through all different kinds autoimmunity and you quickly realize it’s more of a problem than you think. What really blew my mind was the approach conventional doctors take towards people, especially those with autoimmunity. They are more interested in ridding you of your symptoms than finding the underlying cause.
For example, when my cholesterol started to rise my conventional doctor quickly jumped to prescribing me a Statin drug. For those of you who know how ineffective and dangerous Statin’s are, you know I was not okay with this advice. I knew my body was trying to tell me something, and throwing me on a Statin wasn’t going to fix it. I needed to get to the underlying cause. After some blood work it turned out my TSH thyroid hormone was super high. Once I got my thyroid down to optimal levels my cholesterol bounced right back to normal; eliminating the need for a cholesterol lowering drug.
I HIGHLY recommend this book to, well, everyone…yes everyone…even if you don’t have an autoimmune disease because there is a high chance that you probably do and just don’t know it yet. Scary. She has a couple of quizzes in the book to help you “self diagnose” yourself.
(Yes, I am wearing penguin leggings in June…)
Remember: Be in charge of your health. Don’t be scared to ask questions. If your doctor is pushing you towards drugs that you don’t feel comfortable with, talk with them. Nobody knows your body better than you.
