Why Your Sugar Drops In The Shower

You’re about to get into the shower and just happen to check your sugar or glance down at your Dexcom. You’re in the safe zone. So you get in. 10 minutes later you start feeling off, so you get out and now you’re LOW. What gives? If your like me and your sugar drops in the shower sometimes, you’re not alone!

Here’s What’s Going On…

Heat causes blood vessels to expand, which increases circulation and makes insulin more easily absorbed. So when you get into that hot shower or bath, the insulin you have in your body, whether it’s just your background (basal), short term (bolus), or both, it’s getting absorbed at a much faster rate – which could cause you to drop.

For me, this usually only happens if I get in the shower right after I’ve bolused for a meal or snack. The heat from the shower causes the insulin to be absorbed faster than the food – resulting in a drop.

But wait… This can be a good thing!

How to Use This To Your Advantage

Knowing that a warm shower can drop your sugar is a game changer! Especially when it comes to bringing down a stubborn high or pregnancy resistance.

Keep this bit of knowledge in your backpocket and when you need to lower a stubborn high.

Whenever I have a high that doesn’t want to budge, or when I was pregnant and needed to come back into range fast, I will give a correction bolus then jump in the shower and voila! I’m back in range.

Here are some of my other tips for lowering a stubborn high.

Question of the Day

This happens to me all the time since I usually shower right after dinner. I always thought my pre-bolus was off or my I:C was off, but this makes total sense now!
